Director of Facilities

Mark Philip plans and supervises the facilities and engineering components of the laboratory, conference, and housing spaces at Janelia Farm. Philip has a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has also earned two master's degrees: one in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the other in business leadership from the University of South Africa, Pretoria.

Before coming to Janelia Farm, Philip spent 27 years in the private sector, leading project teams and directing manufacturing operations of firms in the pharmaceutical, food products, and industrial chemicals industries. Most recently, Philip was with the international pharmaceutical company Elan Drug Technologies, directing the facilities aspects of its solid oral dose manufacturing site in Gainesville, GA. There he led master planning for the site; directed capital expansion projects covering new products, technologies, and support infrastructure; and set up new engineering, maintenance, and calibration systems to successfully meet federal regulatory requirements. Philip says he is drawn to Janelia Farm by the campus's clear and driving purpose in supporting biomedical research in a unique environment.
