Becoming the manager of the Drosophila and Media Prep Shared Resources at Janelia has been quite a change from being Gerry Rubin’s lab manager at UC-Berkeley for 23 years. Moving from a lab with a single focus to a facility comprised of multiple labs with various directions of research has been an exciting transformation for my career.

I have enjoyed assembling a group of talented individuals who are an integral part of the science at Janelia. There have been both personal and professional challenges as the fly stocks have grown from 2,000 to 22,000 over 4 years and with a similar growth in Media Prep as well. Both departments have at least tripled in size since opening in 2006 and it has been exciting to watch both my staff and Janelia develop.

While in the Rubin lab, I managed the cytogenetic core for the Berkeley Drosophila Genome Project where I used my cytological expertise with polytene chromosomes to help map the Drosophila genome. My educational background includes a BS and MS in Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Prior to working at UC-Berkeley, my career involved working in fly labs at the University of Minnesota and the University of Utah.
