Victoria Butler
I studied Biological Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, studying Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, before specializing in Neuroscience during my final year. I am currently studying for a PhD in C elegans biology at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, in the lab of Dr. William Schafer. I am interested in understanding how the locomotion network coordinates movement. As part of my PhD I am working on a Visitor's Project at Janelia Farm, where I have built a setup to allow calcium imaging from the muscles and motor neurons of freely-moving worms. I am excited to be able to use newly developed methods for in vivo optical imaging to investigate how the activity of muscles and neurons correlates with behaviour. I am also investigating how genetic mutations that alter movement can change the activity of the locomotion circuit. I have enjoyed teaching Cell Biology to first year undergraduates. I am a keen runner, and I enjoy swimming, playing squash and playing the piano.
