Ulrike is a Physicist, Microscope Builder & Data Scientist with a passion for community building/engagement, outreach, and teaching. She has over 10 years' experience in building and running advanced light microscopy systems, data/image analysis in particular analysis of advanced light microscopy data, including super-resolution and single-molecule analysis and correlative light and electron microscopy techniques, and development of novel image acquisition/analysis schemes and workflows.

She studied Physics at the Technical University in Munich and did her master studies in the laboratory of Wolfgang Baumeister in Martinsried/Munich on correlative cryo-FM/EM microscopy at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry. Afterward, she joined Stefan Hell’s laboratory in Goettingen at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry. There, her Ph.D. studies were focused on combining two advanced light microscope technologies (4Pi-RESOLFT nanoscopy). After her Ph.D. in Physics, she joined the NIH/NCI in Bethesda as a postdoctoral fellow to use, develop and combine imaging and bio-molecular techniques to understand how gene expression works (single-molecule imaging, transcription imaging).

Currently, she works as a research specialist at the Advanced Imaging Center (AIC) at the Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA, USA. Here, she builds and modifies advanced light microscopes (lattice light-sheet microscope, iPALM, MOSAIC, SiMView, etc), consults and assists (inter)national visitors with their imaging sessions at AIC scopes and their respective data management and analysis workflows, organizes and teaches imaging/microscopy workshops and further develops / implements image/data analysis strategies for users from around the world.

Furthermore, she is highly engaged in community building/engagement, outreach, and teaching activities focusing on community service, women/diversity in science, open science, and microscopy for more than 15 years.
