I am interested in the large-scale patterns of biological neural network connectivity, and the tools used to discover that connectivity. I develop tools for CATMAID (catmaid.org), a web application used by scientists internationally to trace neurons and their connections from electron and light micrographs. With continuing improvements in automated microscopy, the bottleneck in turning a brain into usable data is the vast human effort required to go from images to a connectome; I hope to increase the throughput of this task with improved tooling openly available to the scientific community at large. Further to this goal, automated image analysis is becoming increasingly viable as an assist, if not yet a replacement, for human tracers. I am working towards incorporating state-of-the-art synapse detection algorithms into CATMAID to accelerate this process.
