Studies of social history (isolation and prior antagonistic encounters) on territorial behavior in Drosophila.
Jasper received his PhD. in Biology from Caltech in Michael Dickinson's lab, where he conducted laboratory studies of Drosophila exploration and dispersal. Before joining the Heberlein lab, he taught undergraduate classes and co-mentored research using the roundworm, C. elegans, as a model for neurodegeneration at Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA for several years as a HHMI teaching fellow. Currently, he uses interdisciplinary approaches -- from molecular genetics to instrument design and computational tools -- for studying the complex social behaviors of Drosophila.
