At Janelia, researchers are developing new technologies that produce incredibly large and complex data sets. The opportunity to deploy such technologies places a premium on new theory, modeling, and analysis tools to appropriately prioritize new experiments and to extract understanding from data. Janelia’s Computation and Theory labs work collaboratively with experimental labs to tackle these challenges.

Branson Lan

Branson Lab / We develop new machine vision and learning technologies to extract scientific understanding from large image data sets. Using these systems, we aim to gain insight into behavior and how it is generated by the nervous system.

Funke Lab / We develop methods and tools for the automatic analysis of microscopy image datasets that are too large for manual inspection alone.

Hermundstad Lab / Our goal is to identify efficient strategies that animals and brains use to make sense of their surroundings and guide smart behavior.

Koay Lab / We view the brain as an adaptive behavioral-pattern generation system implemented through a neural-pattern modification process, which incrementally builds solutions using a set of rules/heuristics that we wish to discover and explain. We utilize free-form spatial exploration tasks for mice in virtual reality.

Pachitariu Lab / We study neural representations in large-scale population recordings from cortex and beyond.

Romani Lab / We want to establish the mechanisms by which microcircuits in the hippocampus and cortex encode, maintain and dynamically update information, and relate these to phenomena expressed at the level of behavior.

Saalfeld Lab / The Saalfeld lab designs and develops methods and software for scalable automatic image analysis and collaborative manual and semi-automatic image annotation.

Sgro Lab / We take a joint theory-experiment approach to understanding how groups of cells integrate information about their environment and each other to work together.

Stringer Lab / We investigate complex, high‑dimensional cortical computations using large‑scale neural data.

Turaga Lab / Our research lies at the intersection of AI and science, with a particular focus on neuroscience, biomechanics, optics, and protein engineering.
