K. VijayRaghavan completed both his Bachelor of Technology degree and his Master of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai (Bombay University). Between 1984 and 1988, he was a Research Fellow and then a Senior Research Fellow at the California Institute of Technology.

He has been a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and J. C. Bose Fellow of the Government of India. He is an associate member of the European Molecular Biology Organization and a Fellow of the Royal Society.

He is currently Distinguished Professor in the area of Developmental Genetics at the National Centre of Biological Sciences, Bangalore. On January 28, 2013, he took over as the Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT). The DBT supports research in the Life Sciences and Biotech in India.

VijayRaghavan’s laboratory studies how functional brain- and motor- circuits are put in place during development.
