Biography
Monti Mercer is a science humanitarian. This native Virginian is trained in neuroscience and is focused on sharing basic biomedical research and charitable acts. He has led the Community Relations department at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus since 2018. This department supports the campus’s philanthropy, outreach, and public engagement initiatives to expand scientific education and charitable experiences within the local community.
Before Community Relations, Monti worked at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Pathology and Experimental Therapeutics. He later joined the Shared Resources team in the Fly Facility slightly after Janelia’s opening in 2006. He worked closely with Janelia’s scientists in this role to develop neuroscience, genetics, behavioral, developmental, and computational biology projects.
Outside of Janelia, Monti’s servitude includes appointments as a Trustee for Dulles District with the Loudoun County Public Library, a Board Director with the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, a STEM Advisory Council member for the Northern Virginia Science Center Foundation, and former Chair of the Board of Directors for Loudoun Cares. He regularly volunteers with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, is a local professional, a cappella singer, and a member of Leadership Loudoun. He was included in Loudoun’s top 40 Under 40 business and community leaders and named Young Professional Leader of the Year at the Loudoun Chamber’s Community Leadership Awards.
