Philip works on interactive tools and visualization techniques to assist the basic biological research at Janelia. He is a member of the Scientific Computing Software group, and collaborates with the Fly EM and CellMap projects, and the Jayaraman and Johnson labs. Before joining Janelia, he developed data visualization applications at Tableau, such as the iOS app, Vizable. Previously, he had a long career in the film industry, writing software for visual effects at Industrial Light and Magic. His work on ILM’s Zeno application framework was recognized with a 2013-2014 Academy Award for technical achievement. He conducted research on computer graphics, focusing on time-critical algorithms that balance accuracy and speed, as a staff member at Interval Research Corporation, an assistant professor at Washington University in St. Louis, and a postdoctoral associate at Cornell University. Philip holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Brown University, and a A.B. cum laude in applied mathematics from Harvard University.
