As Janelia grows and evolves, so too does the campus’s branded mug, reflecting changes to the institute’s style, logo, and website.

Coffee and tea drinkers at Janelia cycle through approximately 2,000 mugs per day, a habit that annually yields some 57,000 tea bags and 2.5 tons of coffee – roughly the same weight as a small elephant. The daily turnover of mugs keeps Janelia’s commercial-grade dishwasher busy. A campus-wide campaign encourages the timely return of used mugs to ensure an ample supply for colleagues and visitors.

In a building that stretches 1/6th of a mile from end to end and rises up three floors, Janelia’s single coffee hub is not an oversight, but a deliberate piece of a larger strategy that aims to foster campus-wide community and collaboration.
