Research Facilities
The Janelia campus was designed to inspire a vibrant scientific community, giving researchers state-of-the-art laboratories and office space; social spaces to relax, discuss ideas, and build relationships; and the amenities to make life and work easier.

Our Model
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has spent six decades advancing discovery science. From the beginning, our core strategy has been to find and generously support innovative scientists, allowing them to focus on their research; gain access to tools, space, and staff; and accelerate discovery.
History
It all started with a conversation in 1999.
Nobel laureate and then-HHMI President-Designate Tom Cech met with Gerry Rubin, then an HHMI investigator and who was soon to become the organization’s vice president for biomedical research, to begin discussing how to expand and diversify HHMI’s strategies for driving science forward. They wanted to foster a powerful new way to give scientists the resources, creativity, and freedom to pursue some of the most profound questions in research.
Janelia Advisory Committee
The Advisory Committee assists the director in setting overall policy and direction for the Janelia Research Campus program. The committee is chaired by the director and meets semi-annually.
