The first episode of a three-part PBS NewsHour series about the science of the brain featured groundbreaking research at Janelia that is helping us understand how brains work. Gwyneth Card, Gerry Rubin, Philipp Keller, and Anthony Leonardo are featured in the story, which explains their research on fruit fly, zebrafish, and dragonfly brains.

NewsHour’s science correspondent Miles O’Brien spent four days at Janelia, interviewing scientists about their work and Janelia’s unique scientific model. He discovered that doing science at Janelia requires a willingness to embrace risk. Though not all research at Janelia is successful, giving scientists the freedom to explore their ideas and collaborate across scientific disciplines allows discovery-driven research to thrive.

“There are no guarantees the research at Janelia will pay off with new Nobel-class discoveries,” O’Brien says, “But that’s precisely the idea. The sure thing need not apply.”
