At a time when it’s not possible to hold in-person scientific meetings, Janelia is sharing science virtually. In partnership with seven other research institutes across the world, Janelia is launching a weekly online seminar series open to all – Life Science Across the Globe.
“The global disruption of COVID-19 has highlighted the growing importance of international collaboration in science,” says Ron Vale, Janelia’s executive director.
The new series will spotlight research happening at biological research institutes in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Every week, speakers from one of eight sister institutions will share two talks via Zoom: one on new science, and one on the culture of science. Talks will be aimed at researchers and trainees in the life sciences, but anyone is invited to tune in.
Vale hopes the project will also foster closer interaction between the participating institutes, perhaps helping students and early-career researchers to build international connections. “We hope that this series will reveal how communication of science across borders can increase knowledge and advance solutions to global problems,” says Vale.
