Biography
Dr. Yu received his BS in physics from Beijing University and received his MS and PhD degrees from Physics Department at Cornell University. At Cornell he worked with Professor John Silcox, a renowned electron microscopist. His graduate research focused on characterizing various nano-materials using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), electron nano-diffraction and computer simulation. After obtaining his PhD, he switched field from physics to biology and worked as a postdoc researcher in Professor Grant Jensen’s lab at Caltech. There he used cryogenic electron microscopy (cryoEM) to study the structure of a wide variety of biological samples, including protein complexes, HIV virus and small bacterial cells. Before joining Janelia in January 2011, He worked at FEI Company, a world leader in designing and manufacturing high resolution electron microscopes. There he worked as a research scientist specializing in the most complicated and most powerful cryoEM, FEI Titan Krios.
