Electron microscopy has sufficient resolution to identify all the neurons in a given image stack and the chemical synapses between them, but historically it has been limited to small volumes. With recent improvements in serial section transmission EM hardware and software, EM volumes encompassing a full adult central nervous system of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster are now within reach. These EM volumes enabled neuronal circuit mapping efforts spanning the entire brain of this important model organism, and are likely to contribute to substantial advances in neurobiology overall.
