Pathways to Spatial Recognition

When you are lost or disoriented, your brain uses cues from your surroundings – landmarks both near and far – to sort out where you are. The information gathered by your senses is transmitted by nerve cells, or neurons, to specific brain regions where the signal is routed through circuits and sent downstream to areas that essentially translate the information into behavior and get you back on track.

Larger than Life: Monique Copeland and Paul Tillberg Explain Expansion Microscopy

Have you ever pressed Silly Putty onto the funny pages of a newspaper, then stretched the transferred picture so it’s larger than the original cartoon? If so, you already have a basic understanding of how expansion microscopy (ExM), an innovative technique being used at Janelia and other labs across the country, works.

Janelia Career Paths: Early Independence

Janelia Turns 10

Seventeen years ago, at a restaurant in Boulder, Colorado, three scientists leaned over a table, deep in discussion about a sketch they’d just scribbled onto the back of a napkin. It didn’t show a biochemical pathway or molecular motif, but an idea for a facility where researchers could develop and access advanced technologies.

Discover Janelia

Janelia Research Campus started as an idea sketched on the back of a napkin. Today, it stands as a research campus where scientists ask, learn, and collaborate on some of neurobiology’s biggest unknowns. How did Janelia go from a concept to bustling campus? Part of the answer lies in the first group of scientists, the pioneers of our research, who took a chance on Janelia. They began to build the foundation of scientists, staff, visitors, and friends behind the collaborative culture that drives our science forward.

System Maintenance

Our team will be making some necessary upgrades to the Janelia.org website infrastructure. During this period, users will be unable to log into the Web site. Site content will still be available for viewing.

We will do our best to limit downtime as much as possible.

The Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology

The Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC LMB) in Cambridge, England, was founded in 1947 and was the world’s leading molecular biology research center for a 30-year period between 1950 and 1980.
