Janelia is in Loudoun County, Virginia. Our campus is close to both the Washington, DC metropolitan area and the many scenic attractions of beautiful Northern Virginia. Janelians enjoy both the luxury of our quiet, wooded campus and easy access to urban amenities.
A concentrated hub of scientific activity rich with intimate interactions (from dinners at our on-campus pub to impromptu chats on a walk around the lake), Janelia offers the intellectual opportunities of a large academic institution, but with all the unique benefits of a small research community.
We did just that when Howard Hughes Medical Institute set out to create the Janelia Research Campus in 2006 to expand the scope of biomedical research. The campus would act as an experiment of sorts – one in which scientists would have no deadlines, no rules, no schedules, no tenure. The result? Nobel Prize-winning science. Cross-disciplinary collaboration. Intellectual freedom. Passionate researchers. Unthinkable projects.
Janelia regularly hosts a public lecture series called Dialogues. In these evening lectures, thought leaders in science and related fields share their work. Serious, insightful, funny, and often personal, the talks offer a window into the issues that impact science.

Our integrated teams of lab scientists and tool-builders pursue a small number of scientific questions with potential for transformative impact. To drive science forward, we share our methods, results, and tools with the scientific community.
Our research model includes core features shared by innovative research institutions:
