Nelson Spruston is the Executive Director. He works closely with the Heads of Janelia’s research areas to determine our research priorities and strategies. He also works with a team of people responsible for ensuring effective implementation of our scientific mission, including research operations as well as several scientific programs that maximize our impact.

Janelia Group Leader Philipp Keller’s laboratory has a knack for finding ways to make the invisible visible. By inventing technology to peer into early vertebrate development, Keller and his team are helping to solve one of biology’s most intriguing problems – how a single cell grows into an animal capable of complex tasks.

When my wife Lynn and I first walked around the empty fields of Janelia Farm in 2001, shortly after HHMI purchased the site, I did not begin to anticipate the depth of the adventure that lay ahead. Developing Janelia into a vibrant research enterprise has been a wonderful and deeply satisfying journey.
